“As for the foreigner…when he comes and prays towards this temple, then hear from heaven” 2 Chronicles 6.22
This verse is part of the prayer of dedication by Solomon for the newly built temple in Jerusalem. The essence of his prayer was that whatever went on in the lives of the people, both good and bad, they would face the temple, remember it is a place of the presence of God and turn back to the God who longed to save them. This longing is also relevant for us. Whatever is happening in your life, whether things are going well or quite the reverse, your calling is to come back to the knowledge of God’s presence within you.
It is always tempting to launch straight into a time of prayer, especially if things seem desperate, but in his prayer Solomon urged the people to remember their calling to focus first on God’s presence, and then allow the rest of their prayers to follow.
You are a temple of the Holy Spirit and his loving presence is within you. You do not have to summon God to come close to you since he is already with you. As you begin to pray, take a few minutes to recall the truth that he is in you. You bear his name and carry his presence. Let this truth bring peace to you as you begin to bring your concerns to God.
