‘She has lost land that was rightfully hers, because she insisted on going for help to those who had none to give.’ Hosea 5.11 (GNB)
These words from Hosea give us a painful insight into the reality of some people’s lives. All of us need help – support, friendship, comfort, sustenance, someone to watch over us and so on. We could, no doubt, add to this list and make it very long indeed.
The danger, of course, is where we go to find this help. Sometimes we turn to people who will be a blessing to us, whereas at other times we may be tempted to turn to people or things that ultimately may cause more harm than good. Our encouragement is always to turn to God, not instead of other people but perhaps before approaching them, so that they can be God’s way of bringing help to us.
1 Peter 5.7 encourages us to, ‘cast all your anxiety upon him because he cares about you.’ When we turn to God, we can be certain that he has unlimited resources at his disposal, and that by intervening directly or by guiding others, he can bring his help to us when we need it.
Whatever your need might be, bring it to the one who cares for you and be open to his help in your life.
