‘Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.’ Colossians 3.12
This verse highlights some beautiful qualities of character and likens them to clothing. There is a lovely sense that we already have this clothing and are simply called to put it on. It is well within our grasp because we have the person of Jesus, who so clearly demonstrates and exemplifies these qualities, living within us. If he dwells within us, then so do these qualities; all we have to do is take them and put them on.
To do this we need to recognise that we need him, in the same way that we might naturally reach for a coat when it is cold. There may be moments today when you might feel lacking in compassion or kindness, or when your patience is wearing a bit thin. At such times, call upon Jesus – who is closer than the air that you breathe – and ask him to give you what you need. Jesus is the personification of these qualities, and if he is in you then you can receive them from him.
As you look ahead at the day before you, what ‘clothing’ do you sense you need? Ask for it now.
