Following Jesus

‘For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.’ Philippians 2.21
Looking out for the interests of Jesus means that you need to be concerned about the things that concern Jesus. So what are some of these?
Our transformation is a key issue. Jesus wants to see his healing touch experienced and our lives reflecting him more and more. When we only look out for our own interests, it is often to do with self-preservation and keeping hold of what we have – but Jesus has other desires.
Another concern on his agenda may well be unity. He loves his church, and whereas we might think we are not involved in complex matters of church unity, we still have a responsibility to guard our hearts and not speak badly or harbour ill thoughts about others, especially other Christians. Unity begins in our hearts.
Jesus is also interested in love. We need to be constantly open to the truth of God’s love, revisiting the wonder of it afresh every day, and then passing it on to others – looking for opportunities to be a blessing to people whether they know it or not.
There is often a cost to looking out for Jesus’ interests. You might not want to be transformed in some areas of your life – perhaps secretly you enjoy having a little moan about others! Showing love can be costly. Yet this is the path along which Jesus travels, and if you want to be his follower you need to be travelling in the same direction as him. Where might that path lead you today?
