‘… Jesus Christ … has freed us from our sins by his blood’ Revelation 1.5
What do you understand by the word ‘forgiveness’? More often than not, we think of it in terms of Jesus taking the punishment for what we have done wrong. However, this phrase takes forgiveness a step further: it speaks about it in terms of freedom. Freedom is more than being released from God’s punishment for our sins, it also implies freedom from the pull of sin upon us.
Our problem is that we don’t always feel as if the pull of sin has been eradicated from our lives, but feelings can be deceptive. We believe feelings reveal to us what is true, and of course sometimes they do. However, sometimes what they reflect is the nature of temptation. You may feel a desire to do something, but that does not mean you have to do it.
This phrase from Revelation reminds us of the fact that when Jesus died the price of our individual sins was forgiven. Something more profound also took place: our sinful nature died with him. You may still be tempted to do wrong, but you do not have to follow your feelings. You have been set free. Take a minute to let the truth of this sink in: ‘I am free!’
