‘So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.’ Ephesians 4.17
The context of this passage is Paul speaking about immorality, and in this verse he talks about living in the futility of our thinking. We may be able to convince ourselves that a certain action or way of thinking is fine, but if it does not align with the truth revealed in the Bible we run the risk of following the futility of our thinking, as opposed to the revelation that God brings.
This is not just true in the context of immorality, but in many areas of life. it also applies, for example, to the way that we think about ourselves. The Bible reveals the awesome truth of God’s personal and intimate love for each one of us, yet our thinking can often contradict this. If we feel unloved and unlovable, we are likely to find ourselves dwelling on this and allowing it to take root in our hearts instead of what the Bible reveals. This is the futility of our thinking because it is at odds with what the Bible reveals. It comes down to a simple choice: which path are you going to follow and where are you going to allow your mind to take you?
You may think you are being humble by wondering if God could ever love you, but Paul would probably call this futile thinking! Take a moment to bring your thinking into line with his. You are deeply loved by God who gave Jesus for you, and his presence will never leave you.
