‘For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.’ 2 Timothy 1.6-7 It is so easy to look at people and feel envious of what they have, and it doesn’t take much until we find ourselves thinking – if only I were more like them! Today’s verses encourage us to take our focus off other people and their gifts and instead to take a long hard look at our own lives, acknowledging the very real possibility that we too may have gifts, possibly unused and hidden, but gifts all the same. When we think of gifted people, we imagine that they have been given a natural ability since birth, in contrast to other folk who have to work hard at whatever it is. However, Paul encourages us to see gifts from a different perspective, more like seeds which we must encourage to grow. He talks about such gifts as embers which need fanning into flame. How do we begin to identify our gifts? Perhaps one place to start is to look at what we feel drawn to. Does your heart go out to a particular situation or certain people? If so, it is likely that God has laid this on your heart, and presumably he has also given you the means to do something to help. It may simply be that it has never occurred to you that you have a gift to offer, so why not begin to explore it today?
