Giving thanks at all times

“Those who sacrifice thank-offerings honour me” Psalm 50.23

This verse is saying that there really is value in offering thanks and praise to God – especially when we do not feel like it. At times, giving thanks can be something of a sacrifice because it is not what we choose to do – it costs us.

As you look back over the Christmas season there will be things for which you can easily give thanks, but there are also likely to be moments that have not been so easy. However, in those moments God was still there, reaching out to you or to others through you. So at times like this, how can you give thanks?

As you prepare for the New Year ahead, it is worth beginning to think back over this past year – difficult though it has been for us all – and identifying the things for which you can genuinely give thanks; the things that have brought you pleasure and enriched your lives.

It is also worth thinking back over the ‘other things’ – the hard times that you certainly would not want to be repeated, but times that you know have also sown something into your life in terms of what you have learnt about God. As you look back on these memories, what can you say thank you for to God?

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
