Giving to God

‘He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.’ Proverbs 19.17

This striking verse reminds us that when we are kind to a person in need our kindness is actually towards God; what we do for others we really do for God. If we took this verse more seriously, we would probably do a lot more to help others! A legitimate question to ask is: “What can I do?” or “Who is it I am meant to help?”

This verse talks about showing kindness to the poor, those who lack something such as money or food, and it may be an act of kindness in giving to someone in such a situation. However, some people’s poverty may be of a different nature. They may lack encouragement, company, affirmation or simply someone to notice them.

Today, look for someone who is in need – perhaps simply someone with a downcast face – and show them kindness. Not only will they be touched, but your action will also touch God.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
