God is all you want

‘… your name and renown are the desire of our hearts.’ Isaiah 26.8
The Message translation of the Bible puts this verse beautifully: ‘Who you are and what you’ve done are all we’ll ever want.’
This sounds wonderful, but is it true? Is it actually true that God is everything you want, or are there one or two other things you would love as well?
When Isaiah wrote these words, he had discovered that God was so wonderful that all his other dreams and desires were eclipsed. The question is this – was there something special about Isaiah or could this actually be true for all of us? Could God be bigger and better than all your other hopes and dreams? Could he really be so real that he is all you want?
Surely this must be true for all of us? Isaiah was a person with ordinary human ambitions and hopes just like us, so what he discovered to be true about God can presumably also become true for us. How do we find it?
When we make a decision that something is true, it is often later that our confidence in it grows and it begins to sink in. Take a few minutes to slowly repeat this phrase to yourself: “All you are and all you have done is all I want.” As you say these words, ponder them so that they come alive for you and the reality of God will grow.
