God is here

‘But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.”’ Mark 14.31

Today is Palm Sunday, where the season of Lent leads into the events of Holy Week. As we read about the events of this week unfolding, it is a time when character was truly tested in many people. One such person was Peter. We certainly cannot doubt the strength of his resolve to stick close to Jesus through thick and thin, no matter what, and it is highly likely that he really meant what he said at that particular moment. Yet of course we know how the story works out and Peter does indeed disown Jesus, just as Jesus had told him he would. We can see two contrary forces here – what Peter believed and the pull of circumstances.

Most of us feel this same tension. We may believe, for example, in the constant presence of Jesus, but there can be times when he feels very distant – perhaps because we have enjoyed his presence in the past and he does not seem as close as before. These are our feelings, possibly shaped by circumstances, but they are not the truth. The truth is that Jesus promised he would always be with us.

Whatever your feelings about the presence of God, take a moment to give him thanks that he is with you now; he has never left you alone and he never will. Right now, you are in his presence so give him thanks.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
