God is still working

‘So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.’ Mark 15.1
These words seem so final. To those who were watching from afar, this must have seemed like the end. So many times in the past, Jesus had demonstrated incredible wisdom and authority over those who now tried him, and it must have seemed as if they had finally got the better of him; evil seemed to have gained the upper hand.
Yet our privilege – as those who know the outcome of the events of the first Good Friday – is to recognise that no matter how bad it seemed to be, something unimaginable was happening that was going to have incredible repercussions for everyone – repercussions that could not be seen by anyone at that time. The hand of God was still working, despite all the apparent evil that seemed to be happening.
It would be true to say that sometimes we simply have no idea what is going on! Evil may indeed seem to be gaining ground and our own lives may seem to be at the mercy of forces beyond our control. However, Jesus said that he would always be with us. These are not words spoken mystically from heaven, but rather from the lips of one who knew exactly what it was like to be at the mercy of people who were out to get him and events that were working against him.
However bad it seems to you – Jesus is with you.
