God’s co-workers

‘The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.’ Genesis 2.15

Work can be wonderful – and it can be a curse!  It depends on what your job is, or even whether you have one in the first place.  When we are stuck in a period of grinding hum-drum activity, the thought of getting away from it all can seem very attractive.

God has called us to be his co-workers.  You might think this only applies to those whose work can be categorised as ‘Christian ministry’, but today’s words from Genesis are general, speaking to everyone rather than just ministers. You may not see your work as having much to do with God and the extension of his kingdom, but it is worth bearing Paul’s words from Colossians 3.17 in mind: ‘And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.’

You are God’s co-worker and once you start to believe it you will begin to see him involved in your day to day activity and recognise the opportunities it presents through his eyes.

As you set about your work today – whether it be in paid employment, voluntary work or simply being there for others – dare to see yourself as God sees you, his co-worker where he has put you.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
