“This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face towards you and give you peace.” Numbers 6.23-26
Most people who go to church regularly will recognise Numbers 6.24–26, as it is often used as the blessing at the end of services. However, this familiarity can rob us of the revelation of God’s heart enshrined within it. These words, which we will look at over the next few days, are so amazing that it is possible to regard them as wishful thinking, words that we quickly file away in the ‘too good to be true’ folder.
It is important to note that this first truth, ‘The Lord bless you’, comes from God himself. The words that follow reflect God’s desire and his wish for us; they reveal what God wants to see in our lives.
As with so many promises in the Old Testament, these words were fulfilled by Jesus. Although this blessing was originally given to the Israelites, Jesus is at the heart of it and all of us who put our faith in him are just as much inheritors of the riches of this blessing as the Israelites. Take a moment to read these verses again slowly. Try to catch the sense that they are God’s words to reveal his heart for you.
Why not take a minute to listen to John’s one minute wonder where he talks about how much YOU matter to God.
