‘For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread’ 1 Corinthians 11.23
These powerful words were spoken at a time that must have been surrounded by confusion and darkness, when Jesus knew that one of his close followers whom he himself had chosen was going to betray him. Rather than run away to a safe place or plead with his disciple to change his mind, Jesus went ahead with one of the most symbolically sacrificial acts of all time – the giving of himself, in what has become for us ‘Holy Communion’. The sheer wonder of Jesus is clearly revealed when the end began to close in and yet he still chose to give himself fully for us.
We all have moments when we might question the reality of God’s love, and wonder whether it really is for us personally. At these times, pondering the way Jesus gave himself fully for us is a powerful reminder of the depth and extent of his love. As Paul put it in Romans 8.32, if Jesus did this, then is there really anything he would hold back from us?
Whether your life is calm or troubled at the moment, allow this amazing sacrifice by Jesus to shape the way you pray today.
