‘Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.’ Genesis 21.1
The Lord’s faithfulness to Sarah, the wife of Abraham, is summarised in this verse. It says everything he had promised her came about, and as Sarah looked back on her life, no doubt she would have said a big ‘Amen’ to this verse and told everyone how true it was – as indeed we can see for ourselves as we look back over her story in Genesis. However, what we are not reminded of is that Sarah did not always perceive God’s faithfulness as events unfolded! She laughed in disbelief when she was first told that God was going to use her to bear a child (Genesis 18.12), but as she looked back at the end of her life, she would have laughed with joy and wonder.
Holding on to the faithfulness of God is hard, and perhaps the only way to do this is to glimpse him as a person. The promises of God are not mantras for endless repetition, but the utterances of the living person of God. When we ponder his love, it is all about the attitude of the living God towards us, and not simply a comforting feeling. The more you can commit to a relationship with the living God, the more his promises and his love will mean to you. Perhaps there is a particular promise you are holding on to at the moment? Try to ‘hear’ the promise coming from the lips of Jesus to you.
