God with us

“This is my resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it.” Psalm 132.14

These words were spoken by God about Zion – his chosen place. However in the New Testament things have moved on and we are told that, as Christians, we are temples of the Holy Spirit and our bodies are physical places where God dwells (see 1 Corinthians 3.16 and 6.19). Our difficulty with this is usually two-fold: we don’t feel it and we don’t remember it.

It ‘s hard to know what we are actually expecting to feel, but feelings can be deceptive. There is a difference between what we feel and what we know to be the truth. A helpful exercise is to take a Bible verse and consciously repeat it for several minutes so that the truth of it can sink into our minds. Today’s verse is a great one to use. Different translations phrase it differently, but the sense is that it is God’s pleasure to live in us, and all of him is dwelling in all of us.

As you breathe in, fill your mind with the phrase: “This is my resting place” – and hear God speaking those words about you. Then as you breathe out, focus on – “here I will sit enthroned”.

After a few minutes, ponder what it means for you to be a resting place for God and what difference it will make to you today.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
