Going over the top

‘Glory in his holy name’ 1 Chronicles 16.10

As an English phrase, this doesn’t really mean much. However, the original Hebrew word, which is translated ‘glory’, carries a number of nuances to its meaning, including a sense of acting wildly or madly and even going over the top with excitement!

Why would we do this? The reason is because what we are talking about is such good news it deserves a reaction. We are glorying in God’s name, his character. The Lord God of heaven and earth, the creator of everything, loves us uniquely and wonderfully. This is the cause for our rejoicing: it was worth rejoicing in yesterday, is worth it today and will be worth it tomorrow, because this good news is equally true today as when it was first heard. Its relevance and power has not changed simply because we think we know it well. In fact, when it comes to pondering the love of God, the old saying is probably true: familiarity breeds contempt.

Right now, take a moment to think about who God is for you. What does it mean to you that he is with you and he loves you? Memorise this verse and come back to it from time to time. Each time you do, consciously rejoice in something wonderful about the God who loves you.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
