Going to the Rock

‘…the rock in whom I take refuge.’ Psalm 94.22

This description of God as a rock is so reassuring. One of the uses of a rock is to be something we can hide behind. At times we all wish that we could understand more, not just about our faith but also about the world in which we live and the people with whom we share our lives. To hide behind God, as a rock, means that we do not have to understand everything. We trust that he does and hope that the more time we spend with him, the greater will be our understanding. To deliberately hide behind God is to acknowledge that he is greater than us, and that, unlike us, he possesses all knowledge.

Another use for a rock is to provide refuge – a solid ground and a safe place to rest above the stresses and concerns of life. As Christmas approaches, many of us are aware that it is indeed a time of great joy and thanksgiving – but perhaps also of extra strain and stress in different ways. To regard God as ‘the rock in whom I take refuge’ is also to acknowledge him as one to whom we can return again and again – every day, hour or indeed minute.

Starting now, and throughout this whole busy season, resolve to pay regular visits to God, your rock. You can hide behind him, shelter in him and even stand on him to seek a different perspective on life – and best of all, you can enjoy knowing that God is delighted to welcome you into his presence as often as you would like to come.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
