Graceful conversation

‘Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.’ Colossians 4.5-6

In some situations, you have probably found yourself longing for the right words to say. It might have been as you tried to share your faith or when you wanted to console someone in need.

According to these verses, it is not about opening your mouth and hearing God speak wise words through you, but rather that there is a certain amount of preparation to be done. This involves ensuring that all your conversations sparkle with grace rather than being boastful, arrogant, condemning or judgmental. Then at the moment when wise or compassionate words are needed, your heart will have been prepared with an ease and naturalness, and what is needed will come forth.

Let this practice start right now. Your next conversation does not have to involve sharing your faith in any specific way, but you could make sure that it sparkles with encouragement, interest and grace. It is a choice you can easily make and put into practice, and as you do so you might be surprised at what else emerges.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
