Growing in faith | 1

“Where is your faith?” Luke 8.25

Caught in a raging storm, the disciples feared for their lives. After Jesus had calmed the storm, he turned to them and asked, “Where is your faith?” There are two ways of interpreting this question, both potentially quite challenging, so we will consider one today and the other tomorrow.

The first interpretation is along the lines of, “How real is your faith in Jesus?” You may profess to believe, attend church regularly, read the Bible, pray and seek to live a life that you feel honours Jesus, but when troubles and anxiety kick in, that is the moment of testing. You might ask why God has allowed something bad to happen, and there can be occasions when this difficult question causes your belief in God himself to waver. At these times, Jesus still asks this same question, “Where is your faith?” Another way of putting it is, “Do you still believe that I am here and can work something for my glory in this situation?”

All too often it is tempting to feel a failure in the face of troubles. This is simply not true – but perhaps you are being invited to grow in your faith?

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
