Guarding what’s important

‘Guard what has been entrusted to your care.’ 1 Timothy 6.20 These words, spoken by Paul to Timothy, strike a wonderful balance as we ponder the grace God has given us and what we are meant to do about it. God has entrusted all of us with so much, and in case you are wondering just what you have been entrusted with, we have all been entrusted with our faith – the unique way that we have responded and taken to heart the message about Jesus. This verse says to us that however this message came to us, we have a duty to guard it. When we talk generally about guarding something, we usually think in terms of protecting it – making sure that nothing comes near it and often hiding it away.  Yet when we talk about guarding our faith, it is a little different.  It is perhaps more helpful to think in terms of first feeding it  – perhaps by prayer, worship, meeting with other Christians and reading the Bible – and secondly putting it into practice by acts of love and speaking words of hope to others. Our Christian faith is never static – in fact it is probably the case that unless we are growing it, there is a danger of it shrinking and wilting.  Take a few moments to ponder how you can grow, and thereby guard, the faith that has been entrusted to you.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
