Healing is Jesus doing good

‘Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”’ Luke 6.9

What is interesting about this statement is that it is set within the context of a story about healing. Jesus was in a synagogue on the Sabbath and came across a man there who had a physical need. We are also told that the religious leaders were present and were watching intently to see what Jesus would do on this holy day. To their indignation, and presumably to the sick man’s delight, Jesus healed him. Then Jesus went on to talk about why he had healed the man, and he put it so simply – healing is about doing good and is the opposite of doing evil.

You may find yourself in need of healing, and this may cause you to wonder whether God wants to heal you. At this point, these simple words of Jesus are so powerful – of course he wants to heal you! If you have any doubts, think about them in the light of the language that Jesus used – does he want to do good to you or to do evil?

We have made healing so complicated, and it becomes much simpler when we look at it the same way as Jesus did. Healing is about Jesus doing good, so bring your needs to him with confidence.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
