“The LORD is righteous, yet I rebelled against his command. Listen, all you peoples; look on my suffering. My young men and young women have gone into exile.” Lamentations 1.18
The book of Lamentations is hardly one of the cheeriest books in the Bible! As the title suggests, it is a lamentation over the state of Jerusalem after the population has been taken into exile. It really is a book that was written at a time of great suffering.
Suffering is common to us all. It might not be on the scale of those being exiled, but any suffering is painful when we are going through it. What is interesting about the book of Lamentations is that the writer does not give up on God or presume that he does not exist because of the dreadful events taking place. He may not understand what is going on, but the writer of Lamentations holds fast to his faith and belief in God and is remembered for it every time we read his book.
If you are going through a hard time and still sticking to your faith in God, you are doing well. Many abandon their faith when things do not go according to plan, and the fact that you are holding on delights God, even if you can’t understand what is going on!
