Holiness and healing

‘The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them.’ Matthew 21.14

This is a lovely detail in the story of the cleansing of the Temple.  One of the first things Jesus did in the newly cleansed temple was to bring healing to those in need.

It is common to regard the story of the cleansing of the temple as an indication of Jesus’ desire that the things of God should be holy and set apart.  However, thoughts of holiness can be alarming: what will it mean to us and what will we have to give up?  The detail in today’s verse gives us a beautiful insight into the heart of God – cleansing is not simply about what we have to give up but is about how much more of God’s abundant life he wants to bring us.

We probably want transformation on our terms; we would like to choose the bits that get transformed!  However, it is far more exciting to come to Jesus and invite him to transform us as he wishes.  What you will discover is that his transformation is more beautiful and far reaching than you could ever imagine.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
