‘Praise the LORD.’ Psalm 148.14
This is one of those psalms in which the author is encouraging everything in all the created world to praise God, from human beings to mountains! So let’s praise him as an obedient response – but how?
Is it just a simple matter of saying, ‘Praise the Lord’? Surely it ought to be deeper and more meaningful than this – but how? Make a conscious effort to focus on each part of your being in turn as you choose to praise him.
Begin with your body. Consciously lift your hands to God as an act of surrender to the wonder of his love, so that your praise and worship begin with an awareness of his love for you. Think through each part of the day ahead and ‘see’ your physical body in every place you will be and pray that in each situation you will bring glory to God.
Allow your mind to praise him, which often involves refusing to entertain thoughts that are not his. We all know that we must make every effort not to think badly of others, but quite often we exercise less control when it comes to self-condemnation. Focus your mind on the truth of God’s love for you – he chose you before the very foundation of the world and he sent Jesus for you before you could do anything to prove yourself worthy.
Your emotions can also praise God. Sometimes this comes quite naturally, but on other occasions it means turning your back on negative feelings and instead choosing to embrace the truth of who you are – a beloved temple of the Holy Spirit and a treasured child of God, for whom Jesus came to reveal the Father.
All creation is called to praise God and this begins with each individual – including you!
