Increasing our desire for Jesus

‘My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.’ Psalm 84.2

In all honesty, is that how you feel about God? You probably think this is how you should be thinking of him, but perhaps the reality is rather different? Perhaps you tend to forget all about him for whole chunks of the day, and when you do remember it’s a matter of a quick prayer for help or to bless someone that comes to your attention. How can you increase your devotion to God?

One simple means of doing so is to set aside five minutes when the only prayer on your lips is the word ‘Jesus’, as you breathe in and out.

It’s good to engage your mind at the same time, so hold on to any mental image of Jesus that comes to you. Don’t decide in advance what this image will be but allow the Holy Spirit to bring to you whatever he wants at this time.

The Bible tells us to ‘fix our eyes upon Jesus’ (Hebrews 12.2). If you spend a little time each day doing just that, there is an increased likelihood that you will return to this image throughout the day and find the wonder of his presence with you whenever you need it.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
