‘We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ’ – 2 Corinthians 10.5
How do we take our thoughts captive to Christ? How do we put this into practice?
Perhaps a key factor here is to recognise that we are taking our thoughts captive to Christ – to a person, not to a philosophy or set of rules. It follows, then, that we do this by being in a relationship with him. Without this relationship we have no-one to whom we can bring our thoughts. Therefore, the first thing we need to do is to invest in it.
This does not involve extra work and lots of effort, but is simply a matter of recognising that Jesus is with us. By sending Jesus, God has already done everything necessary to open the door for us to have a relationship with him. All we need to do is to acknowledge the relationship and live in it – and our own times of prayer are a great way to feed it. The more we are conscious of it, the more likely we are to be able to come back to it throughout the day.
In those moments when we turn to Jesus, we now have somewhere to take our negative thoughts. Ask yourself whether they are what Jesus is thinking about you, or about someone else. Then it is simply a matter of choosing to believe what he says, rather than what is going through your mind.
