“Is anything too hard for the Lord?” Genesis 18.14
The answer to this question is bound to be ‘No’. If anything was too hard for him then he would not be God! However, God was not asking a philosophical question; he was asking for trust.
The context for this passage is Sarah being told that she would bear a son within the next year. She laughed at the thought because as the Bible simply puts it, she ‘was past the age of childbearing’. It was at this point that she was asked this simple question: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” What is most encouraging about the question is that it is not purely random and plucked out of nowhere but is based on the promise that God had already given to Abraham (Genesis 15.4). This was not something new that Sarah was called to believe, but a promise of old to which she could attach her faith.
Similarly, when we are asked to trust in God it is not a random call that comes to us from nowhere, but it is in the light of his unending love for us. Our ability to trust is based on God’s promise that he will always be with us, and in the knowledge of Jesus’ promise that he came to give us abundant life.
It is when we hold these truths before us that we find a new confidence to answer that same question – “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”
