“…hallowed be your name” Matthew 6.9
The literal meaning of this phrase is something like, “may your name be held holy”, but what does it really mean? The name of God does not simply refer to what he is called, but instead refers to everything that belongs to him; it is about his character.
In this verse, it is the name of the Father that is holy. In other words, it is the character of the Father that we must not forget to take seriously. Do we tend to neglect taking his character seriously? Sadly, we are probably guilty of this quite often – and it is always to our disadvantage!
On every occasion when we forget the Father’s love for us, it bothers him. This is an astounding thought, and Jesus revealed something of the Father’s desperation that we really grasp and do not forget his love. So many people view the love of God as distant, or even worse as something warped, believing that although he says he loves us he is actually behind all manner of hurtful and arbitrary acts of unkindness to us.
We will never hope to understand why evil things happen, but one of the first things Jesus encouraged in the prayer he gave is this: never be tempted to lose sight of the truth and the reality that you are uniquely and individually loved by Father God. Spend a few moments now to accept the wonder of his love for you.
