‘. . . for he has done it.’ Psalm 22.31
There can sometimes be an element of ‘will he, won’t he?’ or ‘you never know your luck!’ in our prayers, and we may not be particularly surprised if some of our prayers seem to go unanswered. In fact, we probably think that God would never have answered them anyway!
Part of the reason for thinking like this is because we struggle to understand why God would want to do something extraordinary for us in the first place.
This phrase at the end of Psalm 22 encourages a different attitude to the activity of God. Here, God is presented as the deliverer who has already wrought our deliverance for us rather than someone who rarely does anything extraordinary nowadays. In 2 Corinthians 1.20, Paul makes more sense of this when he writes, ‘For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ’. In other words, when Jesus lived, died and was raised again, he did all that was necessary for the promises of God to be fulfilled.
It is no longer worth questioning why God would do something special for you, but instead spend time looking at what he has already done for you and reflect on how this might alter your prayers.
