It’s not because of who you are

“When I called him he was but one . . .” Isaiah 51.2
These words of God refer to Abraham and remind us that Abraham became the father of many nations. In fact, we are told in Genesis 32.12 that his descendants would be as numerous as the grains of sand upon the sea. Yet when God called him it was very different – there was just Abraham. God did not choose him because he had a large family or had proved he was capable of being a good father to many children. When God called him, Abraham was a long way from where God knew he would end up.
You may feel that you are also a long way from where God wants you to be, and the distance you need to travel may seem enormous, but the good news is that this should never cause you to doubt that God has called you. He hasn’t called you because of your achievements, but simply because he loves you. In fact, in Ephesians 1.4, Paul wrote that we were all chosen ‘before the foundation of the world’, before we were even born and certainly before we achieved anything.
However you feel you are doing, take a moment to reflect on this encouraging truth: it doesn’t matter what you think you are achieving, God has put his hand upon you and chosen you – and he knew what he was doing!
