It’s OK to wallow

“Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practised the latter without leaving the former undone.” Luke 11.42

There is an encouraging gem for us in this ‘woe to you’ passage. Jesus is warning against being so hung up on the smaller matters of faith that the bigger picture gets lost. A huge part of the bigger picture is the love of God and Jesus says it is utterly wrong to neglect his love.

Yet so many of us do exactly this. We bypass it, forget about it and don’t remember to find it afresh. The consequence is that we get waylaid by secondary matters and lose the ability to pass on his love to others.

Spending time wallowing in God’s love can seem self-indulgent when we sense there are weightier matters needing our prayer. However, Jesus calls us back to what is perhaps the greatest calling: to rest and abide in his love so that it flows out to others. Right now, turn your attention to his love for you and rest in it.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
