Jesus is here

‘Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said.’ Matthew 28.9

The Living Bible translation is lovely. In it, Jesus says to his disciples: “Good morning!”

Think about it, a few days ago they had seen Jesus die in public and since then they had probably been in fear for their lives. Rumours began to circulate that Jesus had been seen, and then amazingly they met him themselves – and he casually said, ‘Good morning’! I suspect that they expected rather more than this from the lips of Jesus in such circumstances!

There is something very beautiful about the casualness of his greeting. It is as though it was perfectly natural for them to see him, especially since he had told them he would rise from the dead. Why should he be surprised to see them? He knew it was going to happen!

Perhaps that is exactly what Jesus would love to say to us – ‘Good morning!’ After all, he promised he would always be with us every minute of the day, so there is no surprise for him! It is us who probably expect a rather different message, perhaps a reprimand or something serious. Yet the truth that Jesus wants us to grasp is simple – he is delighted to be with us.

So, what is our response? In Matthew 28, the disciples’ response was to worship him, so it seems wise to take our lead from them and do likewise, acknowledging that Jesus really is here and surrendering to the truth of his presence with us.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
