‘But I have prayed for you . . . ’ Luke 22.32
In this passage Peter is about to be told that he is going to fail Jesus, despite his protestations to the contrary. That news is preceded by these words spoken by Jesus. They must have brought such comfort to Peter after the event; Jesus had already spoken to his ‘Abba Father’ about the situation.
What was true of Peter is also true of each one of us. Jesus has prayed for us; he has spoken to his ‘Abba Father’ about us. In Romans 8.34, Paul reveals a vision of Jesus seated at the right hand of God interceding, or praying, for us. The context in which Paul writes is very personal. He has just been speaking about the people who have been called by God. That includes us, and Jesus is praying for each one of us.
All too often we do not pray as we think we should. Our prayers may seem weak and faithless. However, things do not depend on our prayers alone. We have Jesus, who is seated close to God and who is bringing our needs and cares to his (and our) Abba Father. If nothing else gives us hope, this revelation should. At this very moment in time, Jesus is praying for you.
