‘Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.’ Luke 18.1
Some people share testimonies of how they utter a prayer to God and instantly amazing things happen in response. However, it is not quite like this for many of us, and whereas there may be the odd moment of stunning breakthrough, often it is a slow journey.
If this is your experience, then you are OK because Jesus said it would be like this. If Jesus told a parable about the importance of not giving up, then presumably he foresaw the real temptation many people have to do just that, to give up.
We are approaching a season of immense promise and good news; God loved us so much that he gave Jesus for us. Yet in the days, weeks and months ahead, we will have many moments of asking – where is he? The news seemed so good, yet reality doesn’t really feel like the promises suggested.
If these are feelings with which you can identify, then Jesus says to you – ‘Don’t give up’. The incredible message of that first Christmas is that Jesus is here, amongst us and active, and this is as true today as it has ever been. He is with you right now; listening, loving and doing things about which you are probably completely unaware. Jesus has not given up, so neither must you.
