‘From the rest he makes a god, his idol; he bows down to it and worships. He prays to it and says, “Save me! You are my god!”’ Isaiah 44.17
For these next few days after Christmas, we are going to spend a little time kneeling before the manger and trying to work out the implications of the one before whom we kneel. Some of the selected Bible passages may not seem particularly ‘Christmassy’, but they may encourage us to kneel in wonder just a little bit more!
It is often said that people are very quick to create their own gods, and often these are a projection of something inside those who do the creating. A desire to create a new god may well be due to the fact that no time and effort has been spent in exploring the wonder of the one true God.
Surely it is impossible for anyone to actually invent a god who is perfectly reflected by Jesus? This is a God who is the creator of all; his power and holiness only matched by his love and passion for those he has created. What’s more, he gave his Son – Jesus – to take upon himself all the sin of the world so that there is now nothing separating us from the God who loves us.
As you spend some time today pondering this image of the baby in a manger, reflect upon the sheer grace of God that this picture reveals. This is your God who has chosen to give himself in order that you might be free.
See below a 12 minute meditation and prayer session by John Ryeland urging us to focus on the light within us. This is your God.
