‘If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God . . .’ James 1.5
This verse makes it sound so simple: we want God to speak to us so all we have to do is to ask him. Yet how many people read these words with some sense of disbelief? Have we not all had moments when we have called out to God and he has not answered? How can it be this simple? Perhaps another way of looking at this is that God does indeed speak to us, but we do not always recognise his voice.
How do you expect God to speak to you – in a deep thundering voice or by writing on a wall? In the much loved passage from 1 Kings 19, Elijah hears the voice of God in ‘a gentle whisper’ (verse 12). A whisper is as real as an earthquake but is very easy to overlook, and perhaps that is what so many of us do.
Maybe God is speaking to us all the time but we simply don’t recognise that it’s him. His voice may come to us in a whisper, or as a spontaneous thought or a picture that suddenly comes to mind, and whilst we have to test these things, we can only do so after we have received them.
Take a moment to ask God to whisper what he thinks of you. Pay attention to the whisper and enjoy his presence.
