‘For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.’ 2 Chronicles 16.9
How would we judge someone who is committed to God? We probably all have our own standards and views about what commitment looks like. We may judge it by someone’s behaviour, their pattern of prayer, the amount they give or a host of other considerations. To be honest, we can be pretty quick to judge!
This verse points out the very good news that it is not about what we or other people think, but what God thinks. Other people look at your actions, but only God actually sees your heart and its motives.
A wonderful phrase you may sometimes hear is that we should live for ‘an audience of one’. In other words, the judgment and opinion you really should be seeking is from God, who in Jesus Christ loved you and gave himself for you. You do not need to seek to impress others, nor worry whether your good deeds have been noticed or if they may have been misinterpreted; you live for an audience of one.
So it is the gaze of God’s loving eyes upon your heart that counts, not the eyes of others. He will not wish that you were someone else as you spend some quiet time with him now, but is looking at you with love and enjoying your company.
