‘In him we were also chosen . . . in order that we . . . might be for the praise of his glory.’ Ephesians 1.11-12
This verse reveals Paul’s dream that when other people look at us they see something so wonderful about God that they turn to him in praise. Now that really is something to live up to! It’s true that people do look at us, but what is it they see? It can be quite a frightening thought!
The temptation is to assume that we have to do something memorable if people are to see God in us, like acting in a holy way or putting on a spiritual mask, but this is not what Paul was saying. Instead, it all hinges on what God does and not on what we have to do. Paul was suggesting that God’s presence within us is natural, simply because we bear his mark upon us. So is there anything we have to do?
Perhaps what is required of us is to believe it. Spend just two or three minutes letting these words, ‘I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty’ (Jeremiah 15.16), run through your mind. Holding on to this truth is what opens the door for God’s presence and naturalness to flow through us and is what will make a difference to those around us.
