‘When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.’ Genesis 17.1
This command is full of glorious possibilities! One translation of the phrase ‘walk before me’ is this: live out your life in my presence. This sounds very grand, but it gets exciting when we make it more specific.
Living our lives in God’s presence means living this very day in his presence, which in turn means living this next hour in his presence and that starts right now. One way to grasp the significance of this is to consider how the next ten minutes might change if Jesus was standing by your side. What would you do differently? What would you say differently? How would you think differently? The chances are that if you took his reality seriously, then the next ten minutes would be quite different from how they might be if you had no sense of his presence.
When you have tried thinking in this way about the next ten minutes, do it for another ten… and then another ten after that. You have already started to live your life in his presence.
