Looking at his love

‘The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.’ Psalm 145.8

Whenever we turn to God in prayer, there is often an initial anxiety as we wonder what God thinks of us. Knowing everything about us, what will he think of our prayer? Often the mental image of a stern God judging our words needs to be laid aside.

These words from Psalm 145 are words that are scattered throughout the Bible – a constant reminder to us of who God really is and what his heart towards us is like. They are words we would do well to call to mind every time we come to him in prayer.

God’s nature, and his choice, is to be gracious and compassionate. In other words, God acts from his heart rather than according to what we may or may not deserve. Anger rises slowly within him, not as a quick reaction to our failings, and he is rich in love, which flows generously from him to us.

These lovely words can be made into a personal prayer through which you can enter into his presence daily: ‘Father you are… Jesus you are…. Holy Spirit you are…. gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.’

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
