Loving God with our minds

“Love the Lord your God with all your . . . mind” Mark 12.30

To worship God with our minds is about choosing what we think about.  The old saying is true: you can’t stop birds flying over your head but you can stop them nesting in your hair!  The things that we dwell upon are the things that will dominate our attention, and by pondering them we give them a worth and value.

The practice of deliberately taking time to turn our minds to God is a wonderful way of fulfilling the command to love God with all our mind.  The more we do this, the more natural it becomes – and the practice can begin today.

A simple and effective means of focussing the mind is to allow the name ‘Jesus’ to run repeatedly through it. When you are next spending some quiet time with God, try to spend around five minutes quietly repeating his name. There may be distractions and other competing thoughts but aim to discover a sense of being before him. After you have done this for a few days, you will probably discover that at various times you find his name running subconsciously through your mind – and when your mind is fixed on Jesus you won’t be tempted to give your attention to anything else!

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
