Loving people is loving God

‘God . . .will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.’ Hebrews 6.10

The beauty of this verse is that it puts so much of our work and effort into context: anything we do to help another person is actually a gift of love to God, and he does not forget that.

So often we can be surrounded by the enormous needs of the world. We may give some money or time for a cause, but ultimately a little voice within us asks if it is really worth it? The need is so great and our contribution so small. Closer to home, if we offer a helping hand to someone perhaps they may not seem to appreciate it or even notice what we have done. Again, it is tempting to ask: was it worth it?

This verse shouts out at us, “Yes, it really is worth it.” The reason is because what we are doing is not just about the immediate help that we give, but about what else our giving achieves. It is an act of love to God as well, a blessing to God that he remembers.

As you carry on caring in whatever way you can, and whatever you give, catch this vision: it is “For you, Father.”

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
