‘For your name’s sake, O Lord, preserve my life; in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.’ Psalm 143.11
It really is an act of faith and trust to be able to stand before God and call on his help, ‘for his name’s sake’. All too often we make everything about ourselves: do I deserve his help? How much do I sense his love? The truth is, it is all about him.
Throughout the Bible, God reveals himself as a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love. This is how he wants to be known, and how he wants to be at the forefront of your mind as you approach him, trusting in who he is and not in yourself.
This can sound so easy, but in practice it is hard to turn away from feelings. Before you pray, spend a few minutes focused not on yourself or your particular needs, but upon God, his love for you and the wonder of his power. In times of prayer, something tends to be magnified, and it is far better that this is God rather than your problems.
