Then I said, “Here I am, I have come— it is written about me in the scroll.” Psalm 40.7
When David wrote these words, he was probably referring to the books of the law that were kept on scrolls and in which he found himself. Of course, he wasn’t actually named on the scrolls in his day, but he was able to read the promises of God and the stories of God’s dealings with his people, and in these he found his own life reflected.
Just as David could find himself, so we can find ourselves in the Bible as well. It can be quite a challenge to open its pages and say to God – “Speak to me”. Doing this recognises that the Bible is not simply a collection of books set in a certain historical context and written for other people, but that somehow it is God’s living word for us today.
When David read the words of scripture, he could say: ‘this bit is about me’. We are invited to open the Bible, read its words and say along with David – ‘this bit is for me’!
