“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.” Psalms 1.1-2
You might be tempted to imagine that the writer was describing a world divided into two groups, leaving us to work out which group we are in! Perhaps he was – but what he was also doing is offering us the opportunity to connect with God again. It really comes down to one simple question – where are you standing? Rather than considering this physically, think about what is going on inside you right now.
Life might be pretty good, or it may be that you are feeling overwhelmed with a particular anxiety or concern about something or someone. Maybe you are feeling sad, or it might just feel as if you are sitting under a black cloud. These are all valid feelings, and none of us should feel condemned if this is how we feel. However, this psalm offers us an invitation to step aside from them and to begin to fix our eyes on God, reminding ourselves of his love, presence and power, and to delight in him and in the way he sees us.
Why not do this now? Pause from whatever you are doing and remind yourself of the great love that God has for you. Focus on the fact that Jesus is with you, as he promised he would be – and perhaps even ask yourself where he is for you. Know as well, that he has placed his Holy Spirit within you to bring transformation to your life.
