Meeting with God

“There . . . I will meet with you.” Exodus 25:22

In the book of Exodus, the people have been led out of slavery and they are given a number of laws to obey. One section of these laws is about the construction of a special place, a sanctuary, to serve as a reminder that God dwells amongst them. This sanctuary contained a special area where God promised to meet with Moses and give him more commands if Moses went there.

There is something quite intriguing about this – the promise of going to a special place so that God might speak to us. In fact, many of us probably have favourite places to go and pray, perhaps places that hold spiritual memories for us and where prayer seems a bit easier.

For me, one of the most exciting moments of the earthly ministry of Jesus is that of the Ascension, an event that we commemorate today. At that moment in time, everything about the presence of Jesus changed. Instead of him being limited to one place at one time, Ephesians 4:10 speaks about him filling ‘the whole universe’, fulfilling his words from Matthew 28:20, ‘I am with you always.’

So what about nowadays? Is there a special place we can go to so that we can be particularly close to Jesus? Actually, there is! It is wherever you are – because that is where he is!

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
