‘Now Thomas… was not with the disciples when Jesus came.’ John 20. 24
How did Thomas feel when he got back to the room where the disciples were meeting and discovered what he had missed? Jesus had appeared to the others, commissioned them, breathed the Holy Spirit upon them – and he’d missed out!
Sadly, the book known as ‘The Acts of the Apostles’ only gives us limited details of the deeds or acts done by those filled with the Holy Spirit, but there is certainly nothing to suggest that Thomas was in any way excluded from those who ‘performed many signs and wonders among the people.’ (Acts 5.12)
The point is that we often look for experience before we feel ready to act – have we been suitably anointed or given a specific mandate from God? This passage suggests that we can do things because of the faith we have in him, and not because of any particular experience. More often than not, what causes us to feel excluded from the things of God is a sense of being held back by something, perhaps a lack of self-belief, feelings of unworthiness or simple fear.
Jesus’ words to Thomas when he did meet up with him are relevant to all of us: “…blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20. 29. Don’t wait for God to give you a clear revelation of what you can do for him today. Instead put your faith in him, make a determined decision not to allow yourself to be held back, and walk forward with him into this day that suddenly becomes full of potential and possibilities.
