‘You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God. . .’ Deuteronomy 5.11
We rightly apply this command to things such as swearing and uttering inappropriate oaths, although there may be another application of this commandment that is both challenging and awesome.
Jeremiah 15.16 states, ‘I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty.’ Jeremiah’s words are later developed by Paul, who explains that our bodies are dwelling places for the presence of God.
Perhaps one of our greatest misuses of the name of God is by having little or no awareness of his presence within us. Either we assume that Jeremiah’s claim is not true for us or we forget to tune into it throughout the day. The challenge of this command in Deuteronomy is to find ways of remembering his presence with us. Let the words of Jeremiah, ‘I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty’, be true for you. Dare to believe you really are carrying the Lord’s presence within you always.
